Digital agency Rippleffect and mobile outfit Grapple have developed a smartphone app which allows users to hail a London black cab at the touch of a button.

They can then track their taxi as it makes its way to them and communicate directly with the driver through in-app messaging.

Dubbed cab:app, it is the brainchild of London cabbie Peter Shrive who hopes it will make life easier, safer and cheaper for people looking for a taxi.

Drivers can pinpoint the exact whereabouts of their client using GPS or send them a message through the app if their location is trickier to find.

The app also includes a 'cab-share' feature which enables passengers travelling in the same direction to share a lift and cut costs.

Shortlist magazine has made cab:app its business app of the week.

The free app is available for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Nokia phones.

Its development was led by the team at Grapple with Rippleffect providing the back-end system and database.
