WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has lost his High Court appeal against extradition to Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Judges decreed that a previous ruling in favour of extradition must be upheld – paving the way for Swedish authorities to quiz Assange on the allegations.

Swedish authorities mounted their extradition request last year after two women in Stockholm came forward to allege that the WikiLeaks figurehead had raped one and sexually molested the other.

Assange asserts that the allegations are politically motivated.

The Australian spent a brief stint in Wormwood Scrubs in the aftermath of the request prior to being bailed by a clutch of celebrities including Jemema Khan to conduct his appeal.
