Facebook and ebay have announced their intention to collaborate in order to change the way people shop and pay for goods online.

This will see ebay incorporate Facebook’s Open Graph connections data into its commerce platform in order to personalise the shopping experience by displaying friend’s purchases and thoughts on products which they “buy”, “want”, “own” or “recommend”.

Third party developers will also have the opportunity to build new social shopping experiences and create personalised apps for buying, selling and sharing.

This will see developers encouraged to think about the‘pre-shopping’ social experience”, of joining friends at an online store, browsing, sharing, and chattering via newly introduced social features.

These are intended to foster greater brand recognition and word-of-mouth familiarity with products — vital in order to ape the appeal of offline shopping.
