A former Mirror Group employee claims phone hacking was rife at The People, and was covered up by executives in charge.

David Brown says colleagues at The People regularly hacked into celebrities phones to find out who they were dating. Among the celebrities targeted, he names Ulrika Jonsson and EastEnders star Jesse Wallace.

In a witness statement leaked to Sky News, Mr Brown says: "A number of the methods used to pry into individuals' lives were illegal and I have little doubt that if these people knew they had been spied upon, they would take legal action for breach of their right to privacy."

Brown’s statement will take some of the glare from Rupert Murdoch’s empire.

There are reports today that 60 people have now lodged claims against News Corp, including Shaun Russell, whose wife and daughter were killed in a hammer attack.
