The NUJ has condemned the 2,000 job cuts being made by the BBC, describing today’s announcement as ‘a watershed moment’ in the history of the corporation.

Today, the corporation announced that it would look to lose 2,000 roles over the next five years, with 1,000 jobs being moved to Salford’s MediaCity UK as BBC 3 transfers to the new site.

According to the NUK, over 7,000 jobs have been shed by the BBC since 2004, claiming that the situation ‘isn’t sustainable’.

Michelle Stanistreet, general secretary for NUJ, said “This is a watershed moment in the BBC’s history – the reality is that the BBC will not be the same organization if these cuts go ahead.

“You cannot reduce budgets by 20% and pretend that the BBC will still be able to be a world class broadcaster. Quality journalism and programming is inevitably going to be diluted. If the BBC presses ahead with these changes strike action across the corporation seems inevitable.”

The NUJ has called for an alternative, and has called for the licence fee deal to be re-opened for public debate. It has also said that it will commission research in alternatives to the cuts.
