Google is set to expand functionality of its +1 buttons to be compatible with display ads, allowing users to share the least annoying promotions with friends.

This means when someone +1’s an ad it will rise in Google’s search algorithms and both their picture and recommendation will appear alongside the product on friends screens.

According to the search firms own blog display ads will begin to carry the interactive buttons from October following its success on websites – where it now generates around 4bn impressions a day.

Eider Oliveira, a senior software engineer at Google, said: “For the first time, you’ll be able to run social-enabled ad campaigns that work across millions of sites in over 40 countries around the world.”

Advertisers, consumers and publishers can all opt out of the programme.
