The Japanese National Police Agency (NPA) has accused China of being the point of origin for a number of cyber-attacks which have targeted websites operated by the Japanese Government and the nation’s largest defence contractor – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.

Japan blames Chine for attacks

Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Japanese invasion of northern China the attacks saw hackers mount multiple denial of service assaults in which large amounts of data were flung at specific websites in order to prevent them from functioning.

According to the NPA 90% of these attacks had been traced back to China where anger still remains over the 1931 Manchurian incident – trigger for the bitter war.

Mitsubishi admitted that computers and servers at its plants had been compromised over the weekend, including the discovery of computers infected with viruses at its head office which could steal information from infected hardware.

Amongst the targets were facilities involved in the production of submarines and nuclear power station components where hackers could operate the computers remotely and even listen in to conversations via the computers built in microphone.
