Alexander Lebedev, billionaire owner of the Independent and Evening Standard, has thrown a punch at a rival live on a Russian television programme.

The billionaire media boss sent property developer Sergei Polonsky sprawling off the stage after the pair's debate about the financial crisis spiralled out of hand.

Justifying his actions on his blog, Lebedev wrote: "Unfortunately, NTV viewers cannot see how Polonsky behaved during the one-and-a-half hour recording. Everybody could see that he was absolutely off his head."
