Pictures of topless women in newspapers could be banned under plans backed during the Liberal Democrat conference.

Former MP Evan Harris called for newspapers and magazines to be subject to the same restrictions as pre-watershed television.

Dr Harris said: "Tabloid newspapers in particular, which call themselves family newspapers, should not be able to portray women in a sexualised way, in a way that the broadcast media would not be able to do in soap operas and children's television programmes before the watershed.

"It's just wrong in my view that this should be seen as normalised.

"Ok, these images can be available for adults if they want to access them, but they should have to reach up to a higher shelf than what is at the general view for young people."
