A survey published today has found a widening North-South divide in the popularity of smartphone brands.

Commissioned for Intelligent Environments, the survey found that Google's Android operating system is the most popular models in Scotland and the north of England, while Apple's iPhone is the favoured brand in London and the south-east of England.

James Richards, director of mobile at digital banking firm Intelligent Environments, said that the figures showed the fragmentation in the market, and that businesses producing apps should create multiple versions for different platforms, so they can be used by all customers.
