Social Media Week: Glasgow SMW set to be the biggest in Europe

Co-organiser Arvind Salwan, director of New Media Corp, commented: “From Wiki-leaks to super-injunctions, it’s been another breakthrough year for the ever-pervasive role of social media. When twintangibles and New Media Corp prepared the bid for Glasgow to become a host city for Social Media Week, we could not imagine the level of interest this would stimulate, across the UK and internationally. As the only UK city to be selected to host the event, after London, it is incredible to think that Glasgow has ended up breaking the record for the number of events held during Social Media Week outside the USA. The global streaming platform will ensure that Glasgow’s creative talents and innovation will not only reach an international audience but will also ensure that a digital legacy remains as a reference for future bid cities.

“It’s tremendous that there will be over 130 events in the city across five days, between 19-23 September, making this the world’s largest single, simultaneous social media event ever, with Glasgow punching above its weight alongside cities such as Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro. It’s also an important marker for Glasgow and an opportunity for us to showcase our creative digital talents to a global audience. The city will host some major brands through the course of the week, including Peace One Day, CNN, Nokia, Google, BBC (London) and Trip Advisor, to name but a few. There will also be an announcement on Glasgow's commitment to the Intelligent Communities Forum."

The Launch event will take place on Monday morning with a talk with Jeremy Gilley of Peace One Day. Registrations are still be accepted to attend.

Judging for the Social Buzz Awards will also take place as part of Social Media Week.
