James Cameron has described the process of converting his smash hit film Titanic into 3D as a mind-numbing process.

Cameron, whose 2009 film Avatar was steeped in special effects and is a well-known proponent of 3D and CG film content, made the comment in an interview with Future Publishing’s TechRadar.

On converting Titanic to 3D, Cameron notes that: “It’s a mind-numbing process; it’s like mowing the lawn with a toenail clipper.”

In the interview published on the website today, TechRadar looks at the world of 3D films and the technology behind them, offering readers an insight into the tricks and techniques employed by Cameron when using 3D, his relationship with the BBC and how he is progressing with both Titanic 3D and Avatar 2.

The magazine met with Cameron at the IBC conference in Amsterdam , and was granted an extended interview with the director.

The interview covers the key elements of how to make a good 3D film, looking at the effects used and the future of this technology and also Cameron’s personal likes and dislikes regarding 3D.

Nick Merrick, publisher of TechRadar, says: “James Cameron is a huge techie, so he’s someone I’ve always really wanted us to talk to. And who better to tell us about where movies and 3D technology are taking us?

“We’re delighted to have the opportunity to bring such a successful and forward-thinking director to our readers.”
