A YouTube channel run by 20 year old Charlie McDonnell has become the first run by a British person to generate more than a million regular viewers on the video sharing network.

McDonnell’s success has come on the back of a series of ‘How to Speak English’ videos in which he discusses the definition of the word “chav” with an American friend and ‘How to be English’ – which includes a guide to the perfect brew.

So popular has been the clip that it was even featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and L’Oreal put an advert on an online monologue about long hair.

This success has prompted McDonnell to abandon plans to University and instead travel to London to pursue a career in media.

Speaking to the Sunday Times McDonnell said: “When people watch YouTube videos, they're usually just one person sitting in front of their computer, and so with that in mind, I try to make my videos more personal, like I'm speaking to one person rather than a big audience.”
