The iPhone rumour mill has been fuelled by an array of unlikely sources over the months, from lost prototypes to Chinese components orders and good old fashioned hearsay. A humble photo of a plate of sushi however may trump them all.

Posted by an Apple engineer on their Twitter feed and labelled simply as “lunch” the innocuous looking pic wouldn’t ordinarily raise eyebrows but for Pocketnow who examined the snaps EXIF data.

This showed that the pic was taken with an iPhone4 – but with an 8MP resolution that is not possible on the iPhone4’s 5MP resolution.

The encoded image data also indicates the sushi was captured by a 3.85mm f/2.8 lens, a step up from the iPhone4’s 4.3mm f/2.4mm lens.

Apple fans are now salivating over the possibility that the latest iteration of the smartphone will carry a camera with the quality of a point and shoot.

The iPhone5 is rumoured to launch on October 21.
