The Government has said that civil servants are banned from accessing Facebook at work, but can still access LinkedIn and Twitter for work reasons.

However, communications workers can still log on to Facebook because their roles "involve use of social media".

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said about the Department for Work and Pensions: "The department recognises social media is a valuable tool for engaging with jobseekers and partners.

"All staff have access to LinkedIn and Twitter for business use and the department actively uses social networking to communicate with customers.

"Access to some internet sites from departmental computers is restricted or blocked. This includes Facebook."

The information comes following a written Parliamentary question from East Dunbartonshire’s MP Jo Swinson.
