A number of prominent websites have been forced offline on Sunday night after a Turkish hackers group attacked their server.

Sites including Betfair, National Geographic, The Telegraph, UPS and Vodafone all saw their traffic diverted to the hackers own site.

The breach came via the domain name system which routes people to websites, by hijacking one of these services the criminals were able to assume the identity of all websites listed by that DNS – including emails.

This saw the hackers tamper with the unique identity of each website to confuse the server into linking with their own.

Although the websites themselves weren’t directly breached the guardian believes that any site hosted by Ascio.com and netnames.co.uk (amongst others) could be affected.
