Footfall at UK stores is down 3.4% on the same time last year, according to the latest figures from Experian.

This week's UK National Index shows an uplift in footfall of 5% compared to last week, which Experian puts down to this being the last full week of school holidays for most regions. But footfall is down 3.4% compared to the same time last year.

The confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) Distributive Trade Survey also reported that sales dropped significantly following the riots for the start of August.

Experian said these recent events and equity prices falling will have "no doubt dented consumer confidence".
