Channel 5 is experiencing a Big ratings boost after its re-launched take on the Big Brother format and a repeat of the Da Vinci Code saw the channel welcome 2.2m viewers (a 10% audience share) between 7:30pm and 10:00pm on Sunday.

The celebrity edition of the reality show helped the perennial also ran of British telly luxuriate in topping its schedule neighbour Channel 4 during peak time on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights before falling back to fifth on Monday.

During the key Sunday night slot ITV1 could pull in a mere 1.78m (8.1%) with a repeat of Joanna Lumley’s Nile and a David Jason documentary. Channel 4 meanwhile drew in 1.27m viewers (5.8%) on the back of Athletics and Hollywood flick Rush Hour 3.

ITV are set to mount a fightback next weekend when they launch their new Ant + Dec vehicle Red or Black Channel 5 is likely to face a much tougher challenge.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "Channel 4 took the decision to cancel Big Brother as we felt it had gone as far as it could creatively. This decision freed up hundreds of hours and millions of pounds back into the Channel 4 schedule substantially improving the diversity of output of the portfolio.

“In the last week alone we've had a season of programmes on Street Art and Debbie Tucker Green's critically acclaimed Random."
