Sunderland AFC has appointed Mike Farnan as the club's new international and national marketing director.

In his new role, Farnan will be expected to develop the club's commercial and sponsorship divisions, increasing brand awareness and revenue streams in both the UK and overseas territories.

He has previously held marketing roles at Manchester United International, Italian Serie 'A' club AC Parma and La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid; as well as spearheading RedStrike Marketing, representing leading brands that invest in sport.

Margaret Byrne, chief executive of the club, said: "Mike's background speaks for itself. He has a huge wealth of knowledge and experience in the sports marketing industry and his know-how will be a huge benefit to the club as we look to grow the business on both a national and international level. We are delighted that he has joined us."

Mike Farnan said: "Sunderland AFC is a club with all the building blocks in place so it's a fantastic opportunity and challenge for me.

"The club has gone from strength to strength in recent years and I'm looking forward to playing my part in its ongoing development."
