Social Media Week: Five Glasgow events worth checking out

Last week saw the deadline for entry applications to host an event as part of Social Media Week in Glasgow. The Drum picks out five events from the current schedule that might be worth checking out during the week-long festival.

1) Online, Mobile & Digital - Legal Issues in Modern Marketing for Businesses

One of the first events of the week, held by legal firm Harper McLeod, with four of its staff discussing the legal issues that social media can provoke for marketing businesses, from employment, to data protection.

This hour-long meet will take place at 10am with a venue yet to be decided.

2) Crowdfunding Viral Ad Campaign Workshop

Taking place at The Lighthouse, on Tuesday 20 September at 9.30 am, crowd Funding platforms SoLoCo, Crowdcube, WeDidThis, GrowVC, Buzzbnk and now Unbound, will host the day-long workshop, which runs until 9.30pm.

The workshop will focus on producing adverts to help promote the messages behind the notion of crowd funding.

3) Social Buzz Awards: Trends and Insights with BBC, Google and more.

Following the Social Buzz Awards judging, some of the judging panel will be involved in a discussion where they will air their views on social media.

The panel includes Alastair Cox from Google Creative Services, Chris Jones, social media manager for BBC, Colin Gilchrist of Digital Face, Paul Fabretti from Origin Creative, Phil Adams from Blonde and speaker Rene Looper.

The event takes place on Wednesday 21 September at STV from 6.30pm. Tickets must be booked in advance.

4) Sport and Social Media

A panel including Frances Boner from Glasgow 2014 and Stuart Mackenzie from Sport Scotland will discuss the possibilities of social media in sport, with discussion, debate and idea sharing.

The event will begin at 3.30pm at Sport Scotland’s headquarters.

5) Social Media Has Kidnapped Your Brand: Social Media and Brand Engagement

This event is being held by main sponsor for the week, digital marketing agency Equator, and will examine the speed of word of mouth and the brutal customer feedback that social media can create and how a brand can successful promote itself using this platform.

James Jefferson, creative director at Equator will lead this session, beginning at 2pm at the agency’s offices in the Moda Building.
