David Elstein, Sky’s former head of programmes, has predicted that within two years the subscription TV provider will be spending more per hour on TV drama than any other British rival.

Elstein made the prediction during a debate at the Edinburgh Television Festival when he claimed that by 2013. “Sky will be making the most expensive drama in British TV.”

The bold prediction was echoed by Ash Atalla, comedy producer behind “The Office”, who said at the same debate that BSkyB would be spending more on comedy than all other British producers combined.

Elstein also expressed the view that News Corp would make a second bid for full ownership of BSkyB within two years.

BSkyB is the largest player in British broadcasting with annual turnover of £6.6bn versus the BBC’s £5bn – traditionally importing much of its content the provider has recently announced it is to spend more on UK shows.
