The BBC is considering moving its in-house production unit to within BBC Worldwide and transforming it into a separate business altogether, a source has told The Telegraph.

The ‘very senior’ source has told the newspapers that the BBC will do this as a result of the difficulty the corporation has in rewarding and keeping staff.

Different incentive packages could be offered to staff should the move to BBC Worldwide be made, it is claimed.

"As it is we can't hold on to people and we can't get people in. How do we make in-house viable in a way that doesn't somehow screw the licence fee payer?", the source is quoted as asking.

The move would not see a change in ownership of the unit, although its account would become separate and it would also become a more commercial business.

The unit currently creates nearly two-thirds of the corporations output, including Top Gear and The One Show.
