An acquisition deal has been agreed which will see Skype buy-over group messaging app company GroupMe.

The deal of the acquisition of GroupMe, which only launched last year, is reported to be between $80m-$85m although neither company has released details.

"Skype and GroupMe have a shared vision of creating applications and experiences that are the daily communications choice for a billion people. We will continue to seek the top talent and technology to make that vision a reality," said Skype CEO Tony Bates.

"The GroupMe team has created an incredibly sticky group messaging experience that works across mobile devices and platforms, making this a perfect addition to the voice, video and text products in the Skype family."

Skype itself is currently in the middle of being acquired by Microsoft with regulators yet to approve the $8.5bn deal.
