Data compiled by Nielsen Smartphone Analytics has found that the 10 most popular Android apps account for 43% of smartphone usage.

Researchers found that the typical Android based smartphone user spent 56min a day using apps or browsing the web – with just a handful of apps dominating that total.

Nielsen refused to name these star performing apps but Don Kellogg, the firms director of telecoms research, said: “With 250,000+ Android apps available at the time of this writing, that means the remaining 249,950+ apps have to compete for the remaining 39 percent of the pie.”

The survey was based on data supplied by meters installed on Android and iOS smartphones, although there are no plans to replicate the research for Apple’s platform.
