In a sign that Facebook might be taking the threat posed by Google+ seriously a senior executive at Mark Zuckerberg’s empire has broken cover to publicly slag off Google’s efforts in the sector.

Sean Ryan, Facebook director of game partnerships, is quoted in Fortune as saying that Google+ “doesn’t have any users”, comparing Google’s tactics to McDonalds copying Starbucks by selling coffee.

Ryan made his remarks following Google+’s announcement that popular games such as Zynga Poker and Angry Birds were being rolled out on the system, forcing Facebook to, literally, up its own game.

The casual gaming market is estimated to balloon in value to around $20bn by 2014 on the back of virtual goods sales, with Facebook pocketing 30% of such gaming revenues on its system whilst Google settles for a mere 5%.

Facebook currently has more than 750m active users whilst Google+ serves 25m.
