The National Union of Journalists has claimed that Jim Oldfield, editor of the South Yorkshire Times has been made redundant.

Oldfield is currently on indefinite strike alongside other journalists at the newspaper who stand opposed to the 19 job cuts being made across five of the company’s Yorkshire titles.

Johnston Press plans to merge the editor roles with the appointment of an editor-in-chief.

According to the BBC, Chris Morley, from the NUJ, said: "All of our members are upset and distressed but ultimately his [Jim Oldfield's] job was one part of the rotten proposal which the company has sought to implement."

Earlier the NUJ called for an investigation into Johnston Press choosing to employ a work experience student to defy the strike at the South Yorkshire Times. The 16-year-old boy was subsequently told not to return upon his presence being reported.
