Mark Harris, managing director of the Sunday Sport, has said the firm is mulling the introduction of a Friday edition of the tabloid.

Harris said the move is part of a bid to maximise revenue from the asset after purchasing the title from administrators earlier this year and could launch the new edition before the year is out.

That deal saw the Daily Sport brand fall into the hands of another bidder but the company does not believe this will impede its ability to make use of the “Sport” brand on midweek editions.

A second midweek edition of the paper, the “Midweek Sport”, is to begin production each Wednesday from August 18 in a bid to maintain a continuous presence on newsstands – the Sunday title remains on sale through to Tuesday.

Harris explained: “The Midweek Sport will be on sale until Saturday. There will be a different identity to it. The Sunday Sport has a weird, wacky element to it. Midweek will be more traditional, in a 'Sport' sort of way."

Four additional journalists have been recruited to cope with the expansion, taking the total to 17.
