The PRCA has said that it welcomes the announcement by UK business secretary Vince Cable that the Government plans to adopt all 10 recommendations made in reviewing copyright and Intellectual property legislation.

Richard Ellis, communications director for the PRCA, said that the UK was in an ‘absurd situation’ in regards to copyright and intellectual property regulation and highlighted its recent warning that a ruling against Meltwater and the PRCA in favour of the Newspaper Licensing Agency and its bid to prevent online media link sharing.

“As a result of some UK newspapers looking to find extra ways to make money from their content without putting it behind a paywall, the onus is now on all UK users of the Internet to ensure they have the necessary licence to view the webpage they are about visit,” continued Ellis. “The judgements of the High Court and Court of Appeal highlight how such fundamental acts as Internet browsing, can become illegal as technology outpaces the law. Every time we display anything on our computer screen it is now classified as making a copy. The Government endorsement of the Hargreaves review is both welcome and necessary.”

The Newspaper Licensing Agency began the legal proceedings to prevent media monitoring companies from sharing the content of newspapers without paying for a license to do so first.
