Leonardo Di Caprio has leapfrogged Hollywood rival Johnny Depp to become the highest paid actor in Hollywood after raking in £47m last year.

DiCaprio was left drowning in cash after two of his films; “Shutter Island” and “Inception” went on to become huge box office successes, grossing £740m between them.

This was especially good news for DiCaprio as, in addition to his princely fee, the actor received a proportion of the profits from both films.

The strong showing was enough to relegate Depp into second place with a pauperly £31m, brought in largely on the back of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

The ranking was produced by Forbes magazine in their annual profile of Hollywood’s top earners and is only an estimate owing to the secrecy which clouds actors pay.

Top 5 Hollywood earners:

1. Leonardo DiCaprio (£47m)

2. Johnny Depp (£31m)

3. Adam Sandler (£25m)

4. Will Smith (£22m)

5. Tom Hanks (£21m)
