Ad of the Day: Gordon's Gin - Philip Glenister

Each day The Drum and TV commercial rating site David Reviews brings you Ad of the Day where we look at some of the most recent ads on TV.

Philip Glenister draws on his reputation for playing plain-talking tough guys in this ad for Gordon's Gin which has him listening with exasperation to a pretentious description of a glass of wine. It's a risky approach but we bet it works and boosts sales dramatically.

Agency: Bartle Bogle Hegarty Creative Team: Justin Moore / Hamish Pinnell / Dan Bailey / Brad Woolf TV Producer: Peter Montgomery Film Prod Co: Hungry Man Director: Paul Gay Producer: Camilla Cullen Dir of Photography: Simon Chaudoir Post-Prod House: The Mill Editing House: Work Editor: Bill Smedley Audio House: Wave

His line could have been so much more.

This campaign is abysmal: co-copywritten by David Brent and Alan Partridge.

It's a strange advert. If you think about it he is actually being quite rude and nasty. He's eavesdropping on another conversation and being quite aggressive. The other group don't really deserve this. I wouldn't be happy if someone behaved like that at a party. He's a party pooper.

I suppose the idea is that the Glenister character is aspirational. Someone has a strange idea of what men aspire to be.
