The Scottish Sun reports that Lawwell is ready to play ‘a significant role’ in reviving the reputation of the league.

Celtic FC’s chief executive, Peter Lawwell, has declared that the media must play its part in restoring the tarnished image of Scottish professional football.

In a state-of -the nation message yesterday, Lawwell, who is a now leading member of the SFA’s new professional game board, believes Scottish football's top-flight image is at crisis stage.

“Last season's sickening Tynecastle assault on Neil Lennon, the death threats and parcel bombs targeted at him plus his spat with Ally McCoist sparked damaging worldwide publicity for the SPL.

“Throw in the referees' strike and former top whistler Dougie McDonald's admission that he lied to Lennon and our game was viewed as a joke.”

The tabloid points out: “Lawwell, like everyone else, was left appalled, alarmed and embarrassed as major sponsors posed blunt questions and colleagues in England left him deeply uncomfortable with their new perception of our game.

"People listen to what Celtic says. They look for role models. They'll listen to Celtic when they won't listen to others,” said Lawwell.

"We've got kids, who have been on every programme imaginable and failed, and they come here, Celtic talk to them and they listen.

He continued to say: "But we are really proud of the club in terms of our values, what we stand for and what others think of us.

"We can go anywhere in the world and people think we're fantastic. It's only here that we seem to have a problem.

"No matter where Celtic goes and no matter who come here - Milan, Barcelona, and Man United - we get total respect.

"That's what we need to get back to.

"I can only talk about Celtic, but we need all our clubs to get back to being viewed in that manner."
