Allegations that the Sunday Mirror was involved in phone hacking, made by a former Trinity Mirror reporter, have been described as ‘totally unsubstantiated’.

Trinity Mirror has said that all of its journalists worked within the law and followed the Press Complaint Commission’s code of conduct following allegations made during BBC’s Newsnight last week.

According to Richard Watson, correspondent for Newsnight, the journalist claimed that phone hacking was ‘quite widespread’ on the newspaper.

The BBC has also reported that former James Hipwell, a former journalist for the Daily Mirror has told a newspaper in Australia that journalists at the Daily Mirror were told to access the voicemails of celebrities to find stories.

Hipwell has said that he is willing to testify to these claims.

Meanwhile, the BBC has also claimed that the News of the World hired a private investigator to follow MP Tom Watson who has led the uncovering of the phone hacking scandal.
