Jane Horrocks has said she is “eternally grateful” for her role in advertising supermarket giant Tesco for the pay checks which have allowed her to be pickier in her choice of acting job.

The veteran actress was speaking ahead of her appearance on Trollied a new Sky commissioned comedy set in, ironically, a supermarket.

Horrocks has dubbed her south west London residence “Tesco Towers” owing to the supermarket chains mortgage contribution.

Castigating today’s broadcasters for a preoccupation with reality TV at the expense of drama Horrocks told the Radio Times: “Tesco commercials have given me licence to avoid crap, and I'm eternally grateful to them.

“I see friends having to do shows on television, which 10 or 15 years ago they wouldn't have considered. Now they have to do them for financial reasons, because TV just isn't investing in drama in the same way.”
