Cable calls for “clear” rules to curtail media moguls
Business Secretary Vince Cable, shorn of his media ownership responsibilities after declaring “war” on Rupert Murdoch, has called for “clear” rules to be established in order to curtail the power of media moguls.
Describing the presence of a small group of press barons as “deeply unhelpful” Cable called for market share limits and a “presumption against” media groups owning both newspapers and TV stations.
Despite admitting that Murdoch had made a “positive contribution” to British media Cable believes such measures are necessary to promote plurality, diversity and choice in the media landscape.
Cable is currently waiting for the recommendations of an inquiry, chaired by Lord Justice Leveson which is investigating measures necessary to ensure media plurality.
