The National Union of Journalists has claimed that Johnston Press has asked a 16-year-old on work placement at South Yorkshire Newspapers to stay at home after it was reported that he was being used to fill in for striking reporters.

The NUJ claims that the 16-year-old, who originally requested to work on the sports desk at the Selby Times, was being asked to write news stories, but has been asked not to return when the request was leaked.

Staff at the Selby Times, alongside Doncaster Free Press and South Yorkshire Times began indefinite strike action on 15 July claiming that they wanted to protect jobs and quality journalism.

Lawrence Shaw, NUJ negotiator, said: "Our strikers have every sympathy with young people who want work experience because they're interested in pursuing a career in journalism . But management at the Selby Times was exploiting that interest so the experience the young man was being offered was in strike breaking. We're glad that exploitation has now stopped."
