A war of words has broken out between News International chairman James Murdoch and two former senior executives at the beleaguered newspaper company.

On Tuesday, Murdoch assured the House of Commons media committee that he had not been "aware" of an email that suggested the phone hacking practice at News International went wider than a "rogue" News of the World reporter.

However former News of the World editor Colin Myler and former News International legal manager Tom Crone claimed that they had informed Murdoch of the email.

Despite this, Murdoch has said that he stands by his testimony.

Meanwhile, BBC News reports that it has learned the FBI plans to contact actor Jude Law following claims his mobile phone was hacked during a visit to the US.

It is alleged a story published by the News of the World in 2003 was based on information obtained from his voicemail which, if proved, could lead to charges in the US because his phone would have been operating on a US network

News International denies the claims.

The Sun’s features editor Matt Nixson, former features editor for News of the World, has also been sacked in relation to phone hacking allegations.

Nixson has been features editor at The Sun since January. It is understood he was escorted out of the newsroom by four security guards and had his computer seized.

The management and standards committee of News Corporation confirmed it had "terminated the contract of a member of staff in relation to his previous work".

The committee said while it was authorised to co-operate fully with all investigations it was also conducting its own enquiries where relevant.

The evidence against Nixson was uncovered as part of the internal News International investigation run at Wapping by Will Lewis, the company's general manager, and Simon Greenberg, the director of corporate affairs.
