STV is set to show the first two series of ITV costume drama Downton Abbey as part of its autumn schedule, the first time the broadcaster has run the programme.

Previously, STV had chosen against airing the series as part of its opt-out policy from ITV, airing a new six-part series of Taggart instead.

Bobby Hain, MD of channels at STV, said: "We’re delighted to bring viewers the first airing of series one of Downton Abbey in Scotland and the much anticipated second series as part of our autumn schedule.

"Downton Abbey has proven to be a hugely popular drama and we very much hope our viewers enjoy it."

The first series will begin on 7 August, with series two set to follow from 18 September.
