MPs are to meet this morning to decide whether to summon News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks to appear before them over the phone-hacking scandal, according to BBC News.

The BBC reports that the Commons Culture Committee also wants to question News Corporation executives Rupert and James Murdoch but may be unable to compel them to appear.

In the last week, News International has shut down the News of the World over the phone hacking furore and has also withdrawn its bid to assume control of BSkyB of which it already owns near 40% of the share capital.

US politicians are demanding a probe into phone hacking allegations.

Brooks has been invited, alongside both Rupert and James Murdoch to give evidence at the House of Commons over the phone hacking scandal, although none have yet responded.

As Brooks is a UK citizen however, she is likely to be compelled to appear, although this will not be true of the Murdochs who are US citizens.

Meanwhile, the phone hacking scandal is growing in America, with speculation that families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks may have had their phones hacked.

The FBI has called for an investigation into whether journalists have broken the Wiretap laws having targeted the phones of US citizens while another investigation has been called for by the Department of Justice to investigate News International’s payment of British police for information.

Should it be found to have paid police, News International parent company News Corporation, registered as a US company, could face charges under US anti-corruption laws.
