In a move which will be examined with considerable interest by local authorities across the UK, an English council has created its own web page dedicated to full press statements that they fear have been cut or taken out of context by local press.

According to HoldTheFrontPage, Medway Council in Kent has launched ‘For the Record’ following a story that appeared in the Medway Messenger newspaper and on BBC radio.

The story involved emergency planning for residents living near a £1bn liquid gas plant in the Isle of Grain.

The newspaper used only part of the statement by the council around evacuation plans for the town, although the paper’s editor said that it used the full statement on its website.

The council’s media manager John Staples explained that the page would be a permanent feature on its website to allow residents to compare statements with media reports.
