Salford City Council has set aside £10m to spend on unspecified projects at MediaCityUK over the next five years.

The 'secret' Media Enterprise Zone Fund was uncovered by the Salford Star newspaper following a freedom of information request.

The existence of the £2m-a-year budget comes against a backdrop of cuts at the council, which is being forced to make £40m of savings.

The Salford Star's exclusive story reveals that it pressed the council as to what the 'MEZ fund' would actually be spent on, but it received no clear answers apart from confirmation that it would not be handing out grants.

Instead it will be invested in the continual development of the council's Media Enterprise Centre at MediaCityUK and to support the "public environment and public transport".
