The National Union of Journalists has asked Trinity Mirror and management at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail to reconsider cutting jobs as a result of the closure of the News of the Word.

In a letter to Trinity Mirror, seen by The Drum, the NUJ has used the situation over the closure of the News of the World, and the Scottish News of the World, to take the opportunity to corner the marketplace in Scotland.

It is understood that one meeting has already taken place between management at the newspaper and Paul Holleran, Scottish organiser of the NUJ earlier today to discuss the proposal – with a further meeting scheduled for later in the day.

It has been reported that 45 journalists have accepted voluntary redundancy after negotiations lowered the number of job losses from 93 to 71, although 26 compulsory redundancies were expected to be made as a result.

26 compulsory redundancies will be made, after 45 journalists accepted voluntary redundancy, after negotiations by the National Union of Journalists lowered the initial number of job losses from 93 to 71.

The letter, addressed to Mark Hollinshead, reads:

Dear Mark,

SUNDAY MAIL

Given the sensational decision to scrap the News of the World and replace it with a seven-day SUN operation, the NUJ are asking you and the Trinity Mirror board to reconsider your position on cutting jobs at The Daily Record & Sunday Mail.

This is a great opportunity for you and your titles to go on the offensive and challenge the News International fold. The strategy of Anglicising the Record and Sunday Mail is flawed in our opinion and we believe that the time is right to change from a position of making defensive cuts to promoting the Trinity Scottish titles as the premier daily titles in this country.

yours sincerely

Paul Holleran
