The world’s newest social media hub has been forced to close its doors to new members following an “insane” clamour of interest – according to Google.

A limited launch of the service numbering in the “thousands” was carried out over Tuesday and Wednesday but this quickly snowballed as each new user was granted 12 invites to dispense as they saw fit to friends and family.

The resultant exponential growth has overloaded Google’s ability to handle growth in a “controlled” manner, prompting a suspension of fresh invitations.

Vic Gundotra, Google’s head of social explained: “We've shut down invite mechanism for the night. Insane demand. We need to do this carefully, and in a controlled way."

A spokesman added: “This is the Google+ Project. We still haven't launched Google+ in its entirety. It's not that the service crashed and melted. We just want to keep it controlled.”
