Gambling company Betfair has seen a 122% rise in customers using mobile platforms from last year.

The company put this increase down to major sporting events such as the football and cricket world cups.

Betfair said that sales using the platforms had an 88% increase during the 2011 financial year.

Raj Vemulapalli, Betfair's vice president of mobile engineering, said: "Over £1billion worth of bets were placed on via our mobile products in fiscal year 2011. Those figures are really encouraging and are spurring us on to keep on innovating in this space.”

He added that developing mobile products is a key priority of the business.
