Beeb bosses are eying up a switch from paired presenters to solo anchors on weekdays in a bid to trim costs at the corporations rolling 24 hour news channel.

At present the format is only used at weekends but with each of the channels 13 presenters thought to earn around £92k a year the BBC Trust believe the policy could form a key plank of its Delivering Quality First initiative.

BBC managers are also looking at ways to better share resources between news programmes with reporters flitting between news programmes such as Today and Newsnight and local radio presenters being employed more widely, broadcasting off peak programming across a number of stations.

The plan is favoured by staff as the best way of maintaining output without impacting upon features, foreign reporters and regional news managers.
