In a survey of hoteliers and B&B owners by TripAdvisor, it was found that only 22% of respondents use social media as a marketing tool, with 75% using their own website to market deals and 39% using email.

The survey found that of the respondents who had a marketing account, 30% of the budgets increased since last year, and 54% stayed the same.

Nearly one third of respondents put online marketing as their largest marketing expense, and 66% said that it was important for consumers to have the option to be able to book using a mobile device.

Users said that TripAdvisor itself was the most effective social media technique for marketing their property (71%), with 16% saying Facebook and 4% saying Twitter.
