Cameron to pursue “open data” policy with fresh data release
Prime Minister David Cameron is to announce the release of a fresh tranche of government data in relation to justice, health, transport and education from next year – according to cabinet office minister Francis Maude.
In a speech in London the minister revealed that the PM would shortly outline the government’s “open data philosophy” and detail some “extremely significant and potentially controversial new data sets.”
The release is designed to kickstart new private sector industries in informatics which have become multibillion dollar enterprises.
Maude explained: “Companies in areas as diverse as life sciences and insurance have told us that better access to public data will help them to grow their businesses. Dozens of new apps and websites have sprung up already on the basis of public information made available so far.”
