Social media platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have all enjoyed a record month in May – fuelled by super-injunction chatter.

Such was the clamour for sordid Giggs gossip that twitter’s UK audience jumped by a third over the month, according to UKOM/Nielsen, as thousands of Twitter newbies logged in to tweet and read about Giggs’ extra marital affair.

The stats indicate that the hype helped Facebook overtake MSN to become the second most popular site in the UK with 26.8m users, behind only Google which registers 33.9m.

Business network LinkedIn registered similar growth, adding 3.6m visitors in May.

Nielsen attribute such stellar performances to a rise in the over 50s dipping their toes in the social media water with growth in this demographic far outstripping that of the Uk as a whole.
