Soul searching for Google as US regulator readies for malpractice investigation
The US Federal Trade Commission is to launch an inquiry into alleged abuse og Google’s dominant position of Google’s search -advertising business.
Reports in the Wall Street Journal suggest that the regulator is mere days away from serving subpoenas on the search giant, heralding the start of another antitrust probe for the firm.
This stems from Google’s near monopoly on the search business with its market share in the UK standing at 90% and 66% in the US.
Critics contend that this dominance allows Google to gerrymander results in favour of their own products and services.
Google denies any wrongdoing, arguing that users are always free to click on alternative options on the web.
The investigation will run in tandem with a similar investigation launched by the European Commission last November.
