Following on from the announcement that Rangers will broadcast their opening game against Hearts on RangersTV, chief operating officer Ali Russell has said that while it is a one-off now, it may be something to consider for the future.

Rangers TV today announced that they will show their home game against Hearts on July 23.

The website, which launched in 2009 and has over 30,000 registered users, had to get permission from SPL and Sky Sports to show the match, where they will unfurl the league flag.

Russell told The Drum: “It is difficult to say how many will watch live but we would hope that between our pay per view service and our subscribers who can’t go to the game or watch on Sky, we could see an audience of anywhere between 5,000 and 15,000.

“We had over 15,000 people watching the championship party live from Ibrox on the last day of last season – which was something we could not promote until the end of the game - so there is certainly an online audience there.

“We always show our games live to overseas fans so we are delighted to confirm our UK fanbase has the chance to see our live service.”

When asked if he thought this was something the club would do for every game, he replied: “We see this as a one-off at the moment for our UK fans but it will be interesting to see how it goes and is certainly an avenue we will look to explore in the future.”
