The German media industry is continuing to wage a campaign of vitriol against Greece as part of efforts stall a multi-billion euro bail out.

Tapping into a popular mood of resentment surrounding the affair Bild ran a front page story depicting Greek protesters waving a flag that labelled Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy as Nazi’s.

The paper is outraged by a perceived lack of gratitude from Athens for the billions expended on rescuing the Mediterranean state from bankruptcy and is being “scapegoated” into stumping up cash by international lending bodies such as the IMF.

Kai Carstensen, professor of economics at the Institute for Economic Research in Munich, says it was a “communications disaster” for Merkel not to communicate directly with German citizens the importance of backing Greece at the start of the crisis.
